F stands for Facts
Hey all! Since it the first post it is going to be quite exiting for everyone, not only for those who are "in it". So to start with I guess it is a good idea to post some interesting and a bit fascinating facts about the space and ISS... well, mostly about the space.
- So, Fact number one! I guess almost everybody knows that there are a LOOOT of galaxies up there in the sky. And there are way more theories on where they are and how they exist. So our universe (or observable universe) doesn't have a constant size, it is always growing. Here is the explanation: as the speed of light is about 3e8 m/s (or about 186,000 miles per second) we can't actually see what is going on there on the Sun at the moment just because the light coming from the sun while you were reading this has not reached us yet. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is about 149,6 millions kilometres and the speed of light is 300K km, so the time when the light coming from the sun will reach Earth is about 500 seconds or a bit more than 8 minutes. So, if you are walking on the street right now, just look on the Sun, describe what you see and... be repaired to understand that it happened 8 minutes ago! Well, back to our universe. What scientists can see through telescopes is actually not happening right now, it happened million years ago or even more! So we just can't zoom it and see what's going on, we have to wait, and we have to wait A LOOOT before we actually realize what is going on. Even if the Sun will suddenly disappear we will notice it only in 8 minutes! There are way more theories about it, so if you want you can watch the following video which I found on YouTube or just skip this part and continue reading.
- The crew of Apollo 11 (Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin) was the first mission who walked on the mood on the July 20, 1969. After their safe return back to the Earth they were placed in quarantine! Here is the image of President Nixon talking to them. This continued until the Apollo 14 crew returned safely. It was decided that the Moon does not contain any deadly diseases. The Apollo 13 crew didn't actually walk on the moon so the did not have to be quarantined, as they returned due a malfunction.
- The hottest planet is not the closest planet to the Sun. Even though Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun, it is not actually the hottest. Mercury does not have any atmosphere meaning that this planet is only hot in the daytime when it is directly facing the Sun. At this stage temperatures can rise to 430°C but at night the planet’s temperature can drop down to a freezing -180°C. Venus is the hottest planet. Its thick clouds trap the Sun’s heat causing Venus to be a as hot as 500°C all the time.
